Pragmatic Peculiarities ofIdiomatic Expressions Interpretation

Weshall now have a close look at some peculiarities ofidioms. An important point which has to be stressed is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial expressions, as plenty of people think. They may be found in formal style and in slang. They may appear in poetry or in the masterpieces of Shakespeare and business letters.

What, then, is an idiom? We may say that an idiomatic expression is some number of words which, if found in the same place, mean something special from the separate words of the idiom when they stand separately. Other idioms are totally common and logical in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Due to the special features of certains idiomatic expressions, we shall study the idiom in general and we occasionally cannot change any part of it (except maybe, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idiomatic expressions. Actually, it is hard to speak or write English without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even understand that an idiom which he uses is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically incorrect causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
